Version 0.3.0
Changelog
What changed in each version of Side. Side updates itself, and shows these notes when a new version is ready.
New
- Tabs, redone. Make and Run share one tab strip. Drag a tab out of the window and it becomes a card that grows into a new window where you drop it. Run tabs can be renamed with a double-click.
- Run tabs name what's running. Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, vim or anything else that sets a terminal title names its tab until it finishes. A name you give the tab still wins.
- Sounds and notifications when an agent needs you. When Side is in the background, or you're on another track or stage, Side plays a sound and shows a notification when an agent needs you or a run fails. Turning on "Also when a turn finishes" adds finished turns. Clicking a notification takes you to that track. Set them up in Settings › Notifications.
- Zoom. ⌘= and ⌘− grow and shrink the editor in Make or the terminal in Run, and ⌘0 goes back to the default. A small pill shows the size while you zoom. In Writer mode, the zoom shows beside the word count.
- Updates in the bar. When a new version is out, a pill beside search offers it, with the release notes, and shows the download's progress. Nothing downloads until you click.
- Motion. Panels, the palette, tabs and stage switches move on springs. Reduce Motion turns them into crossfades.
- One set of status words and dots across Think, Tracks, Run and tabs: Needs you, Working, Failed, Ready for review.
- The base branch is the first row in Tracks, so you can work on it without a track.
- Dotfiles (.env, .github) and files like Dockerfile and Makefile show in the explorer, Quick Open and the agent's file tools.
- The Markdown preview shows local pictures. Remote pictures load when you click them.
- Dropping a file or picture into a Run terminal types its path, so Claude Code can take image drops.
Fixes
- Moving the window by its top row no longer scrolls the open file to its top.
- In the Markdown preview, a long table cell wraps inside its column instead of running into the next one.
- Editor themes now color Review's diff, Make's background, the top row and the line numbers.
- Switching Run tabs no longer shows a blank terminal for a moment.
- Toggle File Explorer works wherever focus is.
- A new tab's title shows right away.
New
- If Side quits unexpectedly, the next launch offers to report it: a GitHub issue opens in your browser with a summary of the crash (versions and where Side stopped, nothing from your files) for you to read and send.
Fixes
- Side no longer crashes with the minimap turned off, or when Review switches to a track with fewer checkpoints.
- Line numbers follow the file you switch to, instead of keeping the last file's until the window was resized.
- A tab being dragged casts a shadow that fits it, on the tab bar and out of the window.
Make
- Live Markdown. View → Live Markdown sets a Markdown file as you'd read it: the reading font, headings at their sizes, bold and italic, math typeset, pictures, rules and tables with their columns lined up. The Markdown shows again on the line you're editing. Format → Bold, Italic and Link (⌘B, ⌘I, ⌘K) in Markdown files.
- Writer Mode (View → Writer Mode, ⌃⌘W): the text alone, in one column. Word count, typewriter scrolling and dimming of other paragraphs, each a toggle in Settings.
- Spreadsheets. CSV, TSV and Excel workbooks open as a spreadsheet: column letters, cells you can select, sort and copy, the selection's sum and average, Find, and a workbook's own number formats, fonts and colors. A sheet follows its file as it changes.
- LaTeX. Highlighting, texlab, and Build (⌘B): latexmk runs, the PDF opens beside the window and refreshes on every save, errors go to Problems, and SyncTeX goes both ways (Show in PDF, and ⌘-click in the PDF). Needs a TeX installation such as MacTeX.
- Svelte, with its language server, and embedded languages colored as themselves: HTML's script and style, Svelte's, and Markdown's code blocks.
- Math in the Markdown preview, and front matter shown as a card.
- File-type icons in the explorer, Quick Open and search.
- Tabs. Two files with the same name say which folder each is in. A tab dragged out of the window becomes a small window of itself, and goes back to its place when let go inside.
Fixes
- Every click places the caret, including the first click into Side's window.
- ⌘W closes an image or a spreadsheet.
- The trust banner stays under the top row.
- The bar's search starts in Commands when Make isn't pinned.
The first release of Side, a native macOS development environment built around tracks: each line of work gets its own branch and folder, its agents, and checkpoints you review and promote back to main.
